The honest answer: it depends. But that's not useful. Here's the range you should expect in East Tennessee, with the drivers that push you up or down within it.

• Forestry mulching: $1,500 to $3,500 per acre. Light-to-moderate density, no burn pile, mulch mat stays as erosion cover.

Six Drivers That Move You Within the Range

1. Vegetation density. Light young growth vs. mature hardwood dominant is a 2x cost swing.
2. Cedar content. Cedar mulches slowly. Heavy cedar can flip forestry mulching from cheapest to most expensive method.
3. Slope. Anything above 15% grade is slower and higher-risk. Add 20 to 40%.
4. Access. A lot the truck can back into is cheap. A lot that needs a haul road cut in first is not.
