• Soil disturbance regulations are tight (near stream buffers, on erodible slopes).
• The site is not immediately heading to a foundation or septic drainfield.
• You want the erosion protection of the mulch mat left in place.
• Speed matters — 1-day turnaround on residential lots.
• Cost matters and vegetation is light-to-moderate density.

Traditional Clearing Wins When...

• The site is heading to a foundation, driveway pad, or septic drainfield — you need stumps out and grade to engineer spec.
• The wood volume is beyond what mulching can economically handle (mature hardwood dominant, or large-diameter trees).
• Mature straight-grain hardwood has mill value that offsets clearing cost.
• Heavy Eastern red cedar is dominant — cedar mulches slowly and inefficiently.
• The end-state is bare pad, not managed vegetation cover.

Combining Methods
